Humans are such a resilient bunch of beings aren't they. Just like you, I too have fond childhood memories of camping and fishing at many of Hawkes Bay's beaches although not down as far south as Akitio, we usually holidayed around Napier and north to Mahia. My first two years were spent on a farm at Wanstead which is just out of Waipukurau- we are of similar age but my family would have moved to Napier by the time your parents owned the store at Pongaroa.

Outback Queensland sounds amazing to the photographer and nature lover in me, how I'd love to spend some time there.

Thanks again, and I'm glad you enjoyed the blog.

FlyingKiwiGirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03596848732189181045noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7179578738149165660.post-34965576248700414182017-05-25T02:00:26.439+12:002017-05-25T02:00:26.439+12:00My email is carolynlacey1960@gmail.com

I liv...Hello, my name is Carolyn Lacey, nee Barnes. I live in outback Qld on Devoncourt Station and just happened to read a NZ lifestyle magezine where I saw an add for Akitio Station so decided to google it and found your wonderful blog. Thankyou so much for a trip down memory lane! I am 57 years old and when I was about 3 or 4 years old my mother and father owned the General Store in Pongaroa. I recall photographs of my older brothers standing outside the post office, amazing to see it is still standing. I remember stories about Dad delivering groceries in an old black hearst. My father was a real softy and apparently gave too much credit, sending him bankrupt, we then moved to Waipukarau and owned the racecourse road dairy or maybe he went bankrupt there because in those days you couldnt go back into bussiness if you were bankrupt, we moved to Wairaki and that isnwhere I remeber the big truck coming and taking all of our belongings, I will always remember my mother standing on the steps screaming!and being left with nothing, vut floorboards! But we must have bounced back from the brink. Anyway my fondest memories as a child is going back to Akitio Station every xmas and camping and cooking crayfish on the beach in 10gallon kerosene tins, no limits in those days andnboy did we have big feasts and then my brothers would paddle their skiff out to the arcades and dive for more, while us kids collected pauas off the rocks, yummo ......the only name I can remeber from there was mum and Dads old friend Joy Bone as my youngest sister was named after her, Joylene.
Thankyou for the memories!Carolyn Lacey, nee Barneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14955625474417557827noreply@blogger.com
